Greatest Books for Studying Linear Algebra

On this video I am going over the very best books for studying linear algebra. Now there are many different actually good linear algebra books so I simply needed to choose just a few to debate.

The Anton Guide on Linear Algebra on amazon: https://amzn.to/3dqIwqo
Schaum’s define for Linear Algebra on amazon: https://amzn.to/2Va2Dm8
The Friedberg Guide on Linear Algebra on amazon: https://amzn.to/3dA6hfP
(the above hyperlinks are my affiliate hyperlinks, so please use these if you buy something, thanks!)

My overview of Friedberg’s e book, which is an “superior newbie e book” https://youtu.be/TFjKfCkjZZs
My overview of Anton’s e book, which is simpler to learn https://youtu.be/V-n4wQX4UN8

  1. Great inspiring channel. I am 50+ and considering studying for Maths now. Here you showed third edition for Elementary Linear Algebra whereas current edition is about 10th. Does it really matter in case of self-study or otherwise? Thanks.

  2. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your recommendation on the Linear Algebra book by Howard Anton. I got it for $ 5.86.
This book is a treasure so easy to read and understand, I LOVE IT. Could you please recommend me one to learn mathematical induction on my own?

  3. I recommend the book "Linear Algebra: Theory, Intuition, Code", by Mike Cohen. It teaches Linear Algebra and its implementation in Matlab and Python programming.

  4. I think Elementary Linear Algebra by Kolman is a much better book for the first course in linear algebra. The book by Strang is also superb but somewhat simpler. Schaum books are of course good books in terms of exercises and problems – they will help with practice no matter what subject we are talking about.

  5. More than years after my last college Cours on Linear and abstract algebra, i'm now using a Book written by Belkacem Said-Houari, the title of the Book is " Linear algebra " And is Edited recently by Springer. The Book is very Clear for beginners, and close to be complete. But i'm searching for a more theoretical book

  6. I so LOVE this video!!!! You have some rather good ideas about which linear algebra book to use if you're just starting out. In fact, as of late, I've taken a rather strong liking to linear algebra myself thanks to some great videos on YouTube that I've been watching!! Thank God for YouTube!! Thank God for YOU, Math Sorcerer!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  7. I would advise the Lienar Algebra Books from the CENGAGE Company and the WILEY Company. Those are teaching books that implement the newest didactic or pedagogic ideas into the chapters, that makes learning easier and lowers frustration. They are quite pricey, though.

What i also think interesting as a second or complement book on them would be "special" Linear Algebra Books with a fresh take on it. For example: Linear Algebra. A Geometric Approach. You first think, wtf, what is that supposed to mean. But it is an attempt at really getting to know Linear Algebra by approaching it from the geometric view. Fascinating insights are guaranteed.

Or: Vector Calculus, Linear Algebra and Differential forms: A unified approach. A astounding book, clearly written for beginners, but somehow it places everything on its head. I advise to go straight to chapter one, and then move from there. What i find most fascinating with this older book is that there is a lot of techniques i would label as meta-commmunicative pedagogics…you have a chapter, and there are little commentaries in boxes at the left, for instance, where the writer illuminates a point where confusion may set in. Somehow it is a take on the history of math, sometimes it is an anecdote about a student asking a question. it is fascinating how the book uses this. Like this – do not forget this is on the left of the MAIN text in the book! But just read this and WTF?! Seriously, lol!

"When Werner Heisenberg discovered 'matrix' mechanics in
1925, he didn't know what a matrix was (Max Born had to tell
    him), and neither Heisenberg nor
Born knew what to make of the
appearance of matrices in the context of the atom."-Manfred R.
    Schroeder, "Number Theory and
    the Real World," Mathematical
    Intelligencer, Vol. 7, No. 4.

Let that one sink in…! Best with a glass of good brandy in your hand, methinks….

  8. Just started linear algebra as a course. Even though our main textbook is the Anton one we're going to be taught from different books as well. I was wondering about the Grosaman and the larson edwards books, are they worth purchasing?

  10. For me, the smell of a book is almost as important a buying factor as its contents. I tried to impress this 'smell of knowledge' on the kids in my primary class when we visited the local library as a means of engaging them… We did get some funny looks though… 😆

  11. What is the probability that a random person was driven to build a huge book collection by the need to fuel an addiction for the smell of old books? This is similar to my suspicion that the teaching profession selects strongly for those with a magic marker fetish.
Problems I've been working on instead of my homework.

  12. I personally really liked Körner's Vectors, Pure and Applied: A General Introduction to Linear Algebra. Thing is that it's full of (mostly trivial) mistakes. Anyone who wants the list of corrections I compiled can message me.
