Join the Amoeba Sisters as they discuss the terms “gene” and “allele” in context of a gene involved in PTC (phenylthiocarbamide) taste sensitivity. Note: as mentioned throughout video, the ability to taste PTC may be more complex than a single gene trait. This video serves as an introduction before exploring Punnett squares in our heredity series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcGDUcGjcyk&list=PLwL0Myd7Dk1FVxYPO_bVbk8oOD5EZ2o5W

While this video only focuses on basic understanding of alleles and genes as well as the ability to taste- or not taste- PTC (phenylthiocarbamide), we encourage learning more! Here is a recommended reading that expands on the genetics involved in tasting PTC and includes some of the history in how it was discovered: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3349222/

The Amoeba Sisters videos demystify science with humor and relevance. The videos center on Pinky’s certification and experience in teaching science at the high school level. Pinky’s teacher certification is in grades 4-8 science and 8-12 composite science (encompassing biology, chemistry, and physics). Amoeba Sisters videos only cover concepts that Pinky is certified to teach, and they focus on her specialty: secondary life science. For more information about The Amoeba Sisters, visit:

We cover the basics in biology concepts at the secondary level. If you are looking to discover more about biology and go into depth beyond these basics, our recommended reference is the FREE, peer reviewed, open source OpenStax biology textbook: https://openstax.org/details/books/biology

Please make video on lethal alleles
Why wasn't I aware of this awesome channel till today? , simply superb
Im failer.
Is this a inherited gene from.my parents?
We tried PTC paper in my class and it tasted nasty
Why do I already understand 8 minutes of this more than a whole year in biology class
why did this 8 minute video make more sense then my 2 week unit
Biology exam in 4 hours T_T, trying to cram, been cramming for ages, but more cram! .ps cheers for this!
this feels like its aimed at a younger audience but its helping me through uni xD. thaanks
I don’t taste it 😪
Any idea where i can buy those PTC strips?
Fascinating! One person could have two A+ ABO RH copies and another person could have one A- copy and one O+ copy and yet a standard blood test will not reveal that it will say that both are A+ blood type. Same thing with B as well.
Oh my goodness, I have a test tomorrow that I am SO not prepared for and your video has literally saved my life, thank you thank you!!!!!!!
You are smoking hot pretty! <3
It taste like nail polish
this vids trash
stfu
I have all the chromosomes
Sundhar
I can taste the PTC. It’s disgusting.
This is a good video but, I found it confusing. I don't really like biology that much. there are too many words that are similar and many words that basically mean the same thing. I don't understand. Also, still don't know exactly what an allele is.
you not tasting PTC is what makes it part of science 🙂 if everyone under the sun could taste it, its significance would be a little less impacting, but the fact that it differs from one person to another creates a question: questions make us research and hence science! 🙂 weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
im late but YOU JUST EXPLAINED STANFORD'S CONDITION OF HAVING 6 FINGERS IM DYING EFWOWFDIWJ
This is perfect timing indeed, because I have a test tm (8th gr) on this unit, so instead of ONLY using my notes as a study guide, I am watching these amazing videos that really break down info efficiently.
Both parent

Your constant enthusiasm for biology is inspiring!
