  1. Here is my take: First of all you don't "get rid" of anything, your either add, multiply, divide, or subtract. Second: You do not subtract 3x from the "like" term on the right hand side. You subtract 3x from the left side and the ENTIRE right hand side, therefore implying the Subtraction property of equality. Then the 3x is subtracted from 5x because they are "like" terms.
